The Preschooler

Spring is finally here. What a great time to go out and explore the great outdoors. In this issue of THE PRESCHOOLER you will find my latest outdoor activities for gross motor development along with science exploration ideas and my book recommendations for spring. With Earth Day taking place on April 22nd, I would like to begin this e-zine with an old values lesson...

Values T.I.M.E.

You do not have to be a great believer in order to agree with the value lessons The Story of Creation teaches us. With Earth Day just around the corner this is a great time to tell (or re-tell) this story to your children with an emphasis on: "God took Adam and placed him in the Garden of Eden to work it and to guard (or to protect) it." Genesis 2:15
You will find the story in a nut-shell and other discussion ideas here: Story of Creation

Outdoor Activities T.I.M.E.

Help develop your child's gross motor skills without spending any money! It is simple, all you need to do is spend your afternoons and weekends at the park running, climbing and playing ball.
Tip: When I want to give my kids my undivided attention, we go to parks where we do not know anyone. Avoiding the adult social scene helps me with focusing on what really matters... those memorable quality moments. For more gross motor activities click here.

Science T.I.M.E.

Spring time is a great time to explore the growth and development of the world around us. Go on nature walks and act as a guide by directing your child's attention to the things they might see, hear and smell. Let them touch and compare various objects in nature such as pine cones, flowers and leaves.
Tip: Bring the outdoors inside by creating a nature collection corner in your house. Collect branches, leaves and rocks with your child. Put your treasures in a basket and place it somewhere your child can reach. Your child can enjoy looking at his/her collection, play with it or use it for art. Ever tried painting with a pine cone??

Story T.I.M.E.

Reading is essential for the development of young children. If you are looking for tips on how to read WITH your kids instead of TO your kids, read this article.
Thanks to my good friends and colleagues Debbie and Marla, our class library always has great books that relate to our theme. These are the choices for best spring books (made by the kids):

Over The Meadow - Ezra Jack Keats
Have You Seen Birds? - Joanne Oppenheim
When Will It Be Spring? - Catherine Walters

Have a great spring!
