Multiple Intelligence
Theory - Howard Gardner
You
might be familiar with the Multiple Intelligence Theory
by
Howard
Gardner. In
his theory, he describes eight
separate
types
of
intelligence:
•
Linguistic (Word Smart)
•
Logical-mathematical (Number Smart)
•
Visual-spatial (Picture Smart)
• Musical
(Music Smart)
•
Bodily-kinesthetic (Body Smart)
•
Interpersonal-communication (People Smart)
•
Intra-personal awareness (Self Smart)
•
Naturalistic (Nature Smart)
These
intelligences appear at various levels in each individual. Some
people are well aware which intelligence they are good at. A classic
case is when a person says: "I've always been good with numbers." Each
of the eight intelligences appear in various levels in each individual,
creating their unique "cognitive profile".
Think
about your child: Are they able to focus and learn when you tell
them a story verbally or do they need pictures to go along with the
story?
A
visual child will have a greater difficulty to simply follow the
story line if we take away the visual support.
Use
the following test to help you assess
which intelligence is dominant in your child.
Now that you are aware of
your child's cognitive profile, keep it in mind when planning
activities with your child. Looking for simple ideas to get started?
