The
Dot – Peter H. Reynolds
Art class is over, but Vashti is sitting
glued to her chair in front of a blank piece of paper - she’s no
artist. To prove her point, Vashti jabs at a blank sheet of paper to
make an unremarkable and angry mark. "There!" she says. That one little
dot marks the beginning of Vashti’s journey of surprise and
self-discovery. That special moment is the core of Peter H. Reynolds’s
delicate fable about the creative spirit in all of us. For
children who need encouragement with art creations
Guess
How Much I Love You – Sam McBratney
During a bedtime game, every time Little Nutbrown Hare demonstrates how
much he loves his father, Big Nutbrown Hare gently shows him that the
love is returned even more.
Great
way to teach children how to express their emotions.
The Giving Tree – Shel Silverstein
A young boy grows to manhood and old age, experiencing the love and
generosity of a tree which gives to him without thought of return.
Difficult
for most children (and some adults) to grasp as a concept but none the
less a great way to talk about giving back and selfless acts of
kindness.
Alexander
and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day - Judith
Viorst
On a day when everything goes wrong for him, Alexander is consoled by
the thought that other people have bad days too.
Chicka
Chicka Boom Boom – Bill Martin
An alphabet rhyme/chant that relates
what happens when the whole alphabet tries to climb a coconut tree.
A fun
way to teach children letters.
The Kissing Hand - Audrey Penn
When Chester the raccoon is reluctant to
go to kindergarten for the first time, his mother teaches him a secret
way to carry her love with him.
A
great book that helps children deal with seperation anxiety.
The
Mitten – Jan Brett
Several
animals sleep snugly in Nicki’s lost mitten until the bear sneezes.
A fun,
imaginative story.
And To
Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street – Dr. Seuss
A
boy imagines a series of incredible sights on his way home from school
so that he will have an interesting report to give his father.
This
book is a great example of childen's need to find ways to comply to
their parents demands.
Paper Bag
Princess - Robert Munch
Princess Elizabeth is to marry Prince Ronald when a dragon
attacks the castle and kidnaps Ronald. In resourceful and humorous
fashion, Elizabeth finds the dragon, outsmarts him, and rescues Ronald
--- who is less than pleased at her unprincess-like appearance. This story is a great way to
teach children that it is the charecter of a person that really counts
and not what they are wearing.
