The Preschooler

We tend to associate the word summer with fun, vacation and relaxing and the word school with routine, boring and work. I am here to change this misconception. The truth is both summer and school time should have a routine, a dash of fun and that dreadful word... work. Did I lose you already? Read on please, it is for your child’s benefit.

For a preschooler work is natural. Work means climbing and running to develop their gross motor skills. It means squeezing water out of sponges and playing with marbles to develop their fine motor skills.

For more activity tips read on...

Activity Tips:

1. Push a little - Encourage your child to try things they haven’t tried yet, such as the monkey bars in the playground or jumping from the ledge into the pool.

2. Lookout for opportunities - Teaching moments are all around us. Play “I spy” on the way to camp, point out different shapes in road signs. Count only blue cars on the highway.

3. Have a routine - Children love predictability, it makes them feel safe. Place a routine schedule in a central place (such as the fridge) and go over the schedule of the day.

4. Do it together - Preschool children benefit from and enjoy spending time with their peers. Arrange for get togethers and playdate over the summer.
