Your Letters to Me:

Debra Cason from the United States writes...

"Thank you Zehavit Meltzer. Your alphabet workbook is wonderful! I work as a preschool teacher for Head Start and I'm always looking for new ways to help my preschoolers enjoy learning their letters. I thank you so much for making your book available and free! I am recommending your book and site to my fellow teachers. Once again, thank you. Debra Cason"

"Love your website! It is very informative and helpful. Thank you for sharing. I will be using it a lot.

"Hi! I love all the resources and info on your site!"

DeLonda from the United States writes...

"Living in Indiana where I have guardianship of my 4 year old grand daughter. Much to my frustration, I am finding that the standards of Pre-K and K are such that I truly believe that my grand daughter will NOT be challenged at all. She's a knowledge sponge and I'm seriously considering home schooling. I love your lesson plans and THANK YOU SO MUCH!"

Diana from the United States writes...

"Hi, I am so excited to have found your wonderful site. I am a grandmother and fortunate to have 2 of my grandchildren near me. My daughter has asked me if I would start a very small informal "preschool" in my home. It didn't take me long to say " I would love to ". So.... since then I have been all over the web looking for info.

I am designing my "school" incorporating a number of different teaching philosophies .

I like a lot of the principles of the Montessori method and the insight that Multiple Intelligences adds to teaching. It is essential to me that the program teaches from a Christian world view so that will be very important as I choose material, especially books.

I am only doing mornings 2 days a week to start.

I was wondering if you had a suggestion for what the mornings activities would look like. I know all the things that I would like to include but have not had enough experience with a group of kids to know what will work. I plan on having free time with centers, circle time, etc. So....any suggestions, advice is very welcomed. My daughter and I are doing this for free to help some of her friends who do not have the finances to send their kids to preschool . I am planning to start the end of this month and do a 6 week trial and see how it goes. I am using Spring Things as the theme. I am only taking 4 kids to start. They are all 3 to 3 and a half. Again, your site has been most helpful. I am looking forward to reading more of it.

I wish you the best as you continue to teach your children and help others do the same.

Blessings, Diana"

My reply...

Hi Diana,

Thank you for visiting my site and for contacting me. I always love to hear from my readers.

Regarding your question here is our morning routine in class:

7:50 - 8:30 - Small play time. It includes table toys, coloring (no cutting or gluing since it causes a bigger mess). We also water the plants and I believe if you have only 4 kids you can open a breakfast corner. I would have a longer play time in the morning for 3 year old. Kids need to play. Also, it is best to be close by but not interfere. Assist them in solving problems but do not jump it. Allow them to try and resolve conflict and problems on their own and simply be there to support them.

8:30ish is clean up and getting ready for circle.

8:35 -9:00 - Circle time. It includes exploring the theme and the main idea we are teaching the children. Ideally the information of what you will be exploring should come from the children and their interests. Always be prepared with 'things' that will evoke their thinking and curiosity such as pictures, books and things from nature. For example you can explore different flowers (as part of spring) and by doing so you can help with their expressive language: This flower is soft. It is white and yellow. It is called a dandelion. Compare the flowers.

9:00 - 9:10 - Music and movement.

9:15 - 10:15 - Center time. Continuing with the flower theme you can use math skills to add up flowers. You can place some flowers in a vase and ask the kids to draw them. The key is to see what the kids like to do and which areas they need help with and find activities that compliment the two.

10:15-11:00 - Snack and Story time.

11:00 - 11:50 - Outdoor play. Use this time to engage the children in gross motor activities and deepening the discussion about Spring.

12:00 - 12:50 - Lunch time.

12:50 - 2:30 - Nap time.

Of course the hours can change depending on your routine but this is more or less the guideline I would recommend.

On another note, perhaps you would want to recommend to your daughter's friends SBI - Site Build It! I still work as a teacher but I also make good money from this website :-)) You can read about building website on my About Me page:

Good luck with your preschool and please keep me posted and let me know if I can help you with anything.

"Hello! I truly appreciate your site. I visit it often as a reference while I develop my own classroom standards and routines. I especially like your spider web lesson plan template. It helps me incorporate my whole room into a theme. Can you tell me more about "Connections to Home?" I'm not quite sure what to include in that box.

Thanks so much!

Andrea"

My reply...

Hi Andrea,

Thank you for visiting my site and contacting me. I always love hearing from my readers. I am glad to hear that you are using the spider web lesson plan template. It is one of my favorite too.

Regarding your question, the connection to home box means ideas and activities that can be transferred to and from home to the classroom. For example if you are doing a unit about plants in that box you might consider including asking parents if they have any expertise about planting, bringing seeds from home to school and planting them and so on.

Essentially this box is filled with ideas of ways to transfer the material learned in class to the home and work in collaboration with the parents in order to deepen the learning experience of the child.
